Event organizer and President of the STLC, Laura Hinojosa, describes the coalition as a partnership of local community leaders, education experts, and national organizations working together to enhance learning opportunities for all of South Texas by ensuring that all children and families have access to strong integrated literacy services and resources. Additionally, Ms. Hinojosa depicts the gala as “an evening filled with honored guests, joyous literary celebrations, and a distinctive focus on our children’s future literacy along the southern Texas Border.” Gala fundraising will benefit the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) programs throughout South Texas.
Arbor has a large presence in the South Texas region and is partnered with both the South Texas and Lower Rio Grande Valley Workforce Investment Boards. Arbor services in the area include One-Stop Career Centers, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Youth Services, and Child Care Services. Because literacy is the foundation of success in education and employment, focusing on improving the literacy rate is of vital importance. “Congressman Hinojosa personally called to request our involvement with this initiative,” said Diane Rath, Arbor’s Senior Vice President and Eastern Division Chief Operations Officer. “We are proud to support this endeavor to transform a region with such great potential.”
According to Rep. Hinojosa, who is very involved with his local communities and Workforce Board, over three million Texans are functionally illiterate. When he launched his literacy initiative, the congressman stated that his goal is “to end the chronic problem of reading apathy and illiteracy plaguing our region.” A devoted advocate for education, Rep. Hinojosa is focusing on the development of an educated, well-trained workforce to reduce the unemployment rate in the South Texas region. The gala event promises to be a great success in stimulating both literacy awareness and program funding, and Arbor is excited to be a part of the literacy movement, providing supportive services to our Workforce Boards and program participants.
