Snohomish County Enlarges Dislocated Worker Program

By Jamie M. Barnes

(Snohomish County, WA) Arbor E&T, LLC's Everett and Lynnwood WorkSource Centers recently expanded their Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Dislocated Worker (DW) program with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. Arbor has served Snohomish County since July 2007. The WIA-DW program is an intensive job training and placement program designed to assist workers who have lost their jobs. The DW program has a funding stream and eligibility requirements separate from the WIA Adult program, although the core services are the same. Those participating in the DW program may also receive intensive services, including case management and high-demand occupational training.

As the incumbent WIA provider for Snohomish County, Arbor has performed extremely well. Even after budget cuts in 2008, resulting in a 50% reduction in staff at the centers, they are meeting or exceeding their DW program goals. Arbor has well-established community partnerships that contribute to the success of the DW program, and a knowledgeable, caring staff who guide the DW participants toward their employment objectives.
