Arbor E&T is Thinking Green

Arbor E&T is Thinking Green

By Jamie M. Barnes

We are researching and developing programs that offer our Education and Training customers the opportunity to learn sustainable, career-level skills while working toward a greener future. Our objectives align with Department of Labor directives and state legislation, and focus on Replicable Programs, development of Transferrable Skills, expansion of Employment Opportunities and promotion of Green Lifestyles. In 2008, Arbor instituted a national research program investigating the green initiatives, tracking state policy and legislative efforts, and developing new partnerships to help meet Arbor’s green objectives:

• Boost Local Economies      • Cultivate Sustainable Jobs
• Create Green Literacy        • Train Our Future Workforce

Arbor carefully researches regional and local economic needs to create partnerships that support local economies and create sustainable jobs. Our goal for each region is to develop replicable programs that have an immediate impact on the job market and provide sustainable employment opportunities. Our One-Stop Centers are staffed by expert Business Services Teams who communicate with the local chambers of commerce, business owners, and managers to discover the unique needs of each community and generate green solutions.

Arbor’s 40 hour modular Green Literacy Curriculum explains how to live as a “green citizen,” what is a “carbon footprint,” and how to conserve resources. An excellent way to familiarize our youth with the green life, the program introduces career paths, and education and training options for many green industries: solar, green construction/retrofit, wind, alternative/clean fuels, water, nuclear, and geothermal energy. Our parent company, ResCare, employs Job Corps instructors who are specially trained and certified by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) to use the Green Advantage Program, and many of Arbor’s training opportunities lead to state and national certifications.

Arbor’s roster of Green Initiatives is growing with new ideas nearly every day, and each initiative carries with it Arbor’s commitment to help create a greener future and provide excellent human services that enhance the lives of individuals.
