National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week 2009, Allen County

(Fort Wayne, Ind.) - The Allen County Housing and Homeless Taskforce, in conjunction with Arbor Education and Training, will commemorate National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week with a public dedication of crocheted hats and scarves for the homeless.  This short event will be held at noon on Friday, November 20, 2009 at the 201 E. Rudisill building.

IMPACT participants, the majority of which are Burmese refugees, have been working on community service projects that include the crocheting of hats and scarves.  On Friday, they will present the Task force with approximately seventy sets, which will be given out to homeless individuals during the upcoming homeless count on January 27, 2010.  The IMPACT participants will continue to donate their crocheted items up until January for the homeless count.  Lisa Smith, Job Developer for Arbor Education and Training, states that it is inspiring to see individuals fulfilling the required participation hours for IMPACT by giving back to the community.

The Allen County Housing and Homeless Task force continuously strives to address and bring awareness to the issue of homelessness in our community.  One of the Task force’s undertakings is the local unsheltered and sheltered homeless counts.   Recently, the Data and Evaluation Committee of the Indiana Planning Council on the Homeless mandated that the count be conducted annually rather than biannually.  The Task force is asking the community for donated items that will be handed out to the homeless during this upcoming count in January.  The following items are needed:  backpacks, duct tape, garbage bags, blankets, gloves, socks, and hygienic products.

For more information on the Allen County Housing and Homeless Task Force or to donate items for the homeless count, call or email Mollie Cripe:  260.424.4908 x 243  or  mcripe@ywcaerew.org
